Almost one year ago...

  • Costume: Torrid
  • Knee High Tights: Torrid
  • Pumps: Torrid

Last year, we were invited to a Halloween party some friends were hosting, and I finally took the opportunity to explain to my friends my interest in crossdressing. These were not the very first friends I had told, but they were among the first. I decided I was going to take advantage of that Halloween party to go out and enjoy myself and properly dress up. Prior to that party I had never worn makeup, and never allowed any pictures to be taken of me while I was dressed up. And I hadn't really been outside properly either. It was a night of many firsts for me and my wife, and ultimately it was a lot of fun, and I realized how awesome some of my friends really are. But it almost didn't happen. And so today, I wanted to tell that story. With time, distance, and a happy ending it's lot easier to laugh at now.

I've heard it said that good judgment comes from experience, and experience comes from bad judgment. This post is about bad judgment.

We decided that for my costume, we would try to do the best possible job we could, and that included makeup. Now, I just want to add that at this point, I had never worn makeup before, and while I do wear it on occasion now, my wife usually does my makeup for me (although I am learning to do my own makeup), and it's not my favorite aspect of dressing up. But I have to say, I love what it can do for my pictures. Oh... right... I crop them all before posting, er, so everyone will just have to trust me on this one. ;) Anyway, so the single biggest "problem" I have with makeup is actually one that I suspect is less common: Facial hair. A 5 o'clock shadow is not usually the effect I'm going for, whether I'm dressed in a masculine or feminine manner, but it's definitely more frustrating for some of my feminine outfits. I have no ill will toward facial hair or body hair in general, on anyone, I just have a preference for less of it on me at times.

Enter bad judgment. Having previously experimented with waxing one leg (Yes, one leg. We ran out of strips, and I ended up shaving the other leg for two months to "even" things out...), I decided that waxing my face would be a brilliant idea.

Now, some part of my brain did have some concerns with this plan. The chief concern was that my facial hair wouldn't be long enough. So I started growing a beard just before Halloween to solve that problem. I also had visions of waxing gone awry and creating an ill placed, and very unfortunate bald spot on my head. And so the day before the party came, and we were in the bathroom, and my wife had applied the wax and placed the first strip on my face, and pulled... (Frankly, I think my wife enjoys this part too much...)

If our neighbors heard anything, they never said anything to us. I think the worst though, was that not a single hair came out. Not one. While the pain was unpleasant, Everything Was Still Okay. I had a Plan B.

Enter more bad judgment. It was now the next morning, I had already cut my leg shaving and I was starting to panic about the timing and how things were going. After a quick trip to the store, we bought a bottle of Nair. After reading and rereading the directions several times, I applied it to my face.

About 10 minutes later, I was washing it off. My face was burning. A lot. Did I mention the smell? Also the burning?

In addition to the "5 o'clock shadow", my face was now bright red and in intense pain. I was hiding in the bathroom, crying in the bathtub, telling my wife to call our friends and say we weren't coming. My wife called our friends, and after passing the phone around and talking about it all, our friends were pretty understanding about it all and had some suggestions and reassurances. So after the phone call and some time to calm down, we resumed getting ready.

I finally broke down and shaved my face with a razor. I have had razor burn before, but this was a whole other level of burn. This was the most unpleasant shave I have ever had. I didn't think shaving could go so wrong. But it was finally done, and I was relatively clean shaven and very red faced (but hey, as everyone told me that day, "that's what makeup is for..."). Also, did I mention the burning? Okay. I just wanted to make sure.

We ended up going to the party and having a great time, and I was even okay with several people taking pictures of me and my wife in our costumes. (Uh, now about tagging them on Facebook... that's a different matter...)

Since then, I have learned more about how to cover a 5 o'clock shadow, and hopefully my makeup this year will be the best it has ever been. (Again thanks to my wife's abilities, certainly not my own...) And there will be lots of pictures, and I will post about everything we do later this week. But for today, I thought everyone would enjoy seeing last year's costume, my first feminine costume, and even the first pictures of me wearing women's clothing ever, and have a good laugh at my story of bad judgment. This year, I plan on making ALL NEW mistakes. :)

  1. while I found your story very interesting and funny... I also was wincing the whole time! I burned my eyebrows OFF with nair when I was 16(trying to retouch the edges), so I KNOW how bad it feels!

I certainly did enjoy the story & the pictures though :) Can't wait to hear about this year's halloween!

  3. Ouch! But time has a way of making everything funny, doesn't it?
Great costume last year, and I'm looking forward to this year's!

  4. What a story! Live and learn, live and learn.

(ps I ALMOST got the costume you wore last year last year as well...I think Wetseal had something nearly identical and I wanted it so much but decided I shouldn't spend money on something I'd wear maybe once)

I can't wait for your halloween post (your wife sounds like a riot, I would love to read her guest post if you ever decide to let her guestblog for you).

  5. OMG, Nair is the DEVIL!!!! I used it for the first time, ever, at my senior year beach week... One of my girlfriends had it in the shower, and I wanted to try it, because I didn't want to shave my legs the rest of the time we were there.

I WAS IN SO MUCH PAIN! I can't imagine how it felt on the face. I cried and applied cold washcloths to my legs and I couldn't go in the sun for TWO DAYS.

    You poor thing.

Also... I love, love, love this costume and I'm so jealous of it. Since you used it already, don't you want to express mail it to me? :) Juuuust kidding.

  9. Ouch! You had me wincing with pain was I read about your mishaps in the saga of hair removal. But at least you now know what to do for the future, right? One of my colleagues has a great mantra: "always make new mistakes." At least you have a valuable lesson learned.

And that costume looks stellar on you, and I'm so glad you ended up going to the party after all. Really excited to see what you wear this year!

  10. Oh my goodness! How horrible/funny! I can only imagine how bad your poor face must have burned! :O One time (and only one time) my mom waxed my eyebrows in an attempt to save money, and she took off the majority of one of my eyebrows! She went "uh oh!" and I looked in the mirror and started crying! I usually am not very sensitive about how I look, but something that noticeable... no bueno! Can't wait to see this year's look! :)

  11. Okay, your right it's funny now, but as one who has lost their eyebrows to Nair,no pun intended, I feel your pain!

That costume is beautiful! We never go to a party,we are just the boring parents handing out candy. My 7 year old chooses to go as a Dr. which I thought was an interesting choice.

Have fun! Can't wait to see this year's costume.

  12. Aww. I've had horrible experiences with waxing myself. Did the wax stick on your face, or did it actually come all off? There's been times when I've tried to wax, pull off the strip, and NOTHING comes with it: no hair, no wax, nothing. So the wax is like, stuck on my body. Ugh. But how horrible to have hair removal problems on your FACE, right before a big party. At least you can look back on it and laugh!

The costume looks really good on you, though. Can't wait to see this year's!

  13. So sorry to hear about your hair predicament, but LOL now :)

I have helped a few male friends dress up for Halloween and by far the most difficult part is covering up facial hair. I don't envy you there, but hope you find a better solution this holiday. Can't wait to see your costume :)

  14. Oh man, I am wincing for you! I'm glad you "made it through" however and had a great time at the party.

As for your costume, I think you look fantastic! I can't wait to see you this year!

  15. Oh Matt- while reading your recount of the great hair removal debacle of '09, I cringed, I shook my head, and I laughed until I cried...because who of us hasn't had a similar bad experience with Nair? Oh wow. Good for you for you continuing on to the party!

  16. Eugh, I'm so mad at you!! I have the same costume for halloween but 1. It's not going to look as cute as it does on you. 2. I dont even get to wear it because I don't have a halloween party to go to anymore. Boo..

  17. Oh gosh. Nair is the worst thing ever invented. I love the rich description you use for all of your stories! This was no exception: fabulous, painful, and funny, all at once. It's so wonderful that you were able to "come out" to your friends! I LOVE your costume, as well. Fabulous.

  18. You've seriously got a knack for writing funny posts. :)

I've used nair before and while it didn't hurt, per se, it ITCHED!!! That stuff is seriously evil. It left my legs smooth for a while but I'm not sure it's worth the itching. Meh.

  19. Meli22 - Thanks!! Its definitely a lot funnier now, but it wasn't at the time! :)

Pamela - Thank you!! And my wife really is a big part of this blog too, and she say hi back! :)

Melanie - Thanks!! Yes, it does get funnier... its hard to express how upset I was at the time, and I definitely couldn't see where I am now from there. :)

Elle - Thank you!! I have seen several versions of this costume that are nearly identical, so it wouldn't surprise me! I figured it was "safe" to buy a whole costume for my first trip out, and so this was a bit of a splurge! I would love for my wife to write a guest post too, so its really up to her! :)

Fashion Momma - I'm sure you would look great in this costume too! I suspect mine isn't the right size though, but I have seen similar versions online! There's always next year! And about your Nair experience... wow... I'm so sorry!

Mary - It all worked out though, and thanks!! :)

Lori - Thank you!! On the up side, every experience I've had with makeup since has been absolutely better! ;)

meg - Thanks!! Things did go much smoother! :)

Jamie - Thank you!! I like that mantra! :)

Rio - Yikes, that sounds painful and frustrating! I totally understand why that was a one time thing! :)

Lesa - Thanks!! Last year was one of the first parties I've been to as an adult, so I wouldn't say it's boring to stay at home. That's cool that you get trick-or-treaters, we never seem to get any. A doctor sounds like a great costume too! :)

Ashley - At least the wax came off completely. Having nothing come off... ouch... that sounds no fun. Time does do wonders to make it all seem funnier, and I've tried to learn from my mistakes! Thanks!! :)

eek - Thanks!! Actually, just shaving really, really good with a fresh blade and then using the right color concealer and the right color foundation seems to work pretty well. :)

    Lisa - Thank you!! :)

Bombshell Beauty - Thanks!! But after all these comments and stories I'm starting to wonder who buys that second package of Nair... :)

aschul11 - I'm so sorry you had trouble with your plans!! It has happened to us before too, and this year even, that's so frustrating! I'm sure you'll look great in your costume though!! I hope you found an opportunity to wear it! (And hey, there's always next year!)

genevieve - Thank you so much!! Not everyone at the party knew, although some of them are in the know now. I did get some fun questions about what I intended to do with those heels after the party though! ;)

Melissa - Thank you!! I do wonder if its actually have a knack for making horrible mistakes and then waiting long enough to write it down so that it seems a lot funnier than it was at the time. :)
