This is an outfit from earlier in the week, and with the weather finally turning, I expect (er, hope?) this will be one of the last summery outfits I post until next year! And hey, its also the last day of September, which is a good thing, I think. September was a wild and crazy month for me and its ending with a wild and crazy day. My wife and I puzzled over this outfit too, she made some suggestions and I kept tweaking things until I just kinda stopped here. I really like it though, I think, but it still feels like something is missing. And of course my beautiful wife took the pictures and made suggestions about the outfit.

First, I have to say thank you to everyone for their response to yesterday's post! I definitely have some more fun ideas to try that incorporate more "menswear" into the blog in the future, now I just need those ideas to work out! And of course, as always I love questions to answers.

It finally feels like fall here, albeit a dreary rainy day type of fall, but I was unprepared with my pictures. So for today, you get something more springlike. I think I've been coming down with something for the past few days too, which probably means I put this together to protest dreary days and feeling sick! We'll go with that explanation. I may have to skip out on a post tomorrow but if I do, I'll be back on Thursday. I hope everyone is having a great day with as much fall as they can handle! Since today's post is going to be all about answering Meli's question (and then some...) from last Friday, I thought I would do more with the idea of constrasting "masculine" and "feminine" clothing. I have worn the "same" outfit styled in both a "feminine" and "masculine" version.

So last Friday, Meli22, who has the most excellent blog The Daily Insanity of a Fashion Addict asked: I've been meaning to ask- are you as sharp looking when dressed to 'fit in' as a guy? Or is this the only time where you focus your creative energy on style? It would be cool to see a 'man' style file once in a while, if you expressed yourself in the fun way like you do when you dress feminine! :) Sadly, the short answer is "not usually". But I wanted to write a post about this because I thought it might be interesting to talk about why, how I am changing that, and some of my experiences with "men's fashion" in general. In a recent email exchange talking with a long time friend I have not seen in years, I explained to him my interest in women's clothing and sent him a link to this blog, he responded with "I took a look at the style blog and have to say you have fantastic female fashion sense. Those outfits look great. How come you always dress like such a slob when wearing men's clothing?" In all fairness, we have rarely seen each other since college, and I will have everyone know I dress at least a cut above slob when wearing "menswear". I think. :)

I have tried to experiment with men's fashion over the years. Many of my experiments were timid though, and ended up relegated to a disused and dusty corner of my closet through my own fears. I want to change that, and I am changing that. So in the future, things like hats, pocket squares, vests, cardigans, ties, bow ties, v-neck shirts and sweaters, french cuff shirts, and nice leather oxfords are all actual menswear pieces I need more of, and need in every color. Thankfully, my blog is helping me work through some of these things, and I am finding myself more free to experiment, even if its only a polo shirt in every color.

So I think the root of my trouble with men's fashion is that I have internalized a collection of social norms and messages about masculinity that, on a good day, leave me with a set of bizarre hangups, and on a bad day with very toxic ideas about what is and is not masculine. Its easy enough to say that I don't actually believe these notions and should ignore the boxes of behavioral norms I have allowed other people to constrain me with, but I'm not sure its ever that simple. For instance, one way adventurous clothing choices can be policed is with the slur "that looks gay". Whether you feel its right or wrong, homosexuality is about a sexual interest in the same sex, and I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with clothing choices. But that doesn't stop some people from informing someone that a particular clothing choice is "gay". The real meaning of the slur is "You're less of a man for wearing that." Which begs the question what is a "real man" and that is just as problematic and fraught with toxic ideas as defining a "real woman" or a "real person".

I have also been obsessed with labels. Labels on clothing in particular. While some people get obsessed with labels by a certain designer or a certain size label (I saw a link on A Pretty Penny about vanity sizing, and I suppose in a perverse sense of "equality" men's clothing is now subject to vanity sizing as well), I have been obsessed with "gender" labels on clothing. I think one of the many reasons for my interest in women's fashion is a feeling of freedom from my hangups about men's fashion.

In fact, one of the harder questions I've had to ask myself about clothing preferences is to ask "If this was the exact same article of clothing, but labelled for a man, would you be so interested in wearing it?" I think this question is probably impossible to answer, but at one time the answer for me would have probably been "No". At this point in my life I have a lot more peace with it, and the answer is much closer to my own ideal of "Yes, the label doesn't matter as much." (For some fun with gender labels and clothing, consider these two classic Seinfeld episodes: The Puffy Shirt and The Glasses, and if that's not enough, check out these men's shoes at Brooks Brothers.)

This has been alternatingly fun and difficult to write. I want to explain my personal experiences because I think it might be helpful, but whole books have been written on policing language and gender norms, and its not a simple topic. Last Friday's "Friend Friday" question coincided with many people referring to the post on Already Pretty: Shouldn't wear that. And I recently saw this fairly "normative" article on men's fashion: What Every Man Needs in His Wardrobe - Updated for the Next Decade which has its ups and downs, but points out that one distinction is that men's fashion is about often about quality and tailoring. Of course, it doesn't have to be. Much like Sal, I am not a fan of prescribed and proscribed "fashion" behaviors, so consider such "Fashion Rules for men" as this obscure absurdity: black suits for men are proper only for servants and the dead, also mentioned at Cubicle Chic in Style Sins: The Black Suit, from a section by The Gentleman, that has some posts with a more positive approach as well. On a more positive note, Academichic had a recent post on men's fashion as well: Academichic... Boy Style and I always enjoy their discussion of gender, feminism, and fashion, and this post was no different: I love color so much, but yet, I would be extremely timid about wearing such bold awesome red pants in a "masculine" presentation. For me, the goal is to reach a place where I would. And when I get there, I don't want to stop wearing my high heels, blouses and wide belts. I just want the label to stop mattering at all.

I had fun with this look I wore yesterday. Maybe this sounds a little crazy, but I actually like menswear inspired pieces or at least playing with "masculine/feminine" contrast. Okay, that probably just sounds pretentious. Its really just an excuse to explain why I tied a scarf in a full windsor. And even the idea of using a scarf as a tie I borrowed from another blogger (I Get Dressed). So while it was still too warm to wear a fall look, I thought it would be fun to add this scarf as a "please cool down so I can wear fall stuff" look. I had to loop the scarf a few extra times to get the length right, but I think it works. Sorta. The scarf kept doing funny things, and we had to take a lot of pictures just to get these 3. I think I would highly recommend this. Actually, I highly recommend tying something in a full windsor. Its a fun knot to tie. Much more fun than its lazy cousin the half windsor.

Yesterday, Lori, who has the totally awesome blog LORISPEAK, asked this question: Out of curiosity, do you change into your lovely outfits when you come home from work? It's just funny cuz a lot of people dress up for work and then put on their sweats when they get home, but you get so cute and dolled up! I wish I could say these are my clothes everyday, after work or not. I rarely go out dressed, but I do try to sneak out every so often, even if its just for a fabulously dressed fast food drive thru trip. Unfortunately, since I usually leave the house at least once a day, I rarely get to dress up for the whole day, and its usually too hard to dress up for even half the day, so I have to take what opportunities I can to dress up the few days a week it is a possibility. Some weeks I don't even get to dress up at all actually. Although since starting the blog, I am getting to dress up more often, but its still not every day. While I am new to style blogging, I know most style bloggers go for either an "outfit they wore that day" format while others go for a more "artistic" blog with less frequent but more whimsical photos and outfits. Since I don't quite fit in either of those categories I get a little vague about the pictures and when they were taken because I like the idea of the "outfit of the day" format, but I can't really dress up every day. So I guess the pictures here really are an "outfit of the day", just not "the outfit I wore for a day". When it comes to actually taking pictures, we've sorta fallen in to the routine of pulling together several outfits one or two days a week and taking pictures so I have some options to pick for each day. I work from home, but I do have to go out for meetings, errands, and that sort of thing, so I don't usually dress like this everyday. Some afternoons everything cooperates and I will get to dress how I want for most of the evening, and we'll take pictures when my wife gets in from her job. I hope everyone understands about the pictures. I really enjoy the conversations and interactions I've had with other bloggers, but I'm just trying to honestly deal with the constraints in my own life. I hope I didn't disappoint anyone.

This was yesterday's outfit. I've had this dress for a while and I like several things about it, but I've definitely felt like it needed something more. And then I saw this inspiring outfit by Collette who runs the awesome Statements in Fashion blog. I love colors a lot, and so while the temptation was there to add a color, I decided going with an all neutral look would be a lot of fun too, and so I replaced the matching fabric belt that came with the dress with this new gray belt I picked up at Torrid recently, and went with these black pumps with an architectural heel. As always, questions for me to answer are welcome in the comments. We didn't get to take these pictures until very late yesterday, and so I was informed by my wife that the adjective for today is sleepy. So as usual, these pictures were taken by my sleepy wife.

This is actually an outfit from a couple of weeks ago, but I wasn't entirely sure how I felt about posting it. I really like all the pieces, I'm just not sure about the whole thing. I kinda think the top doesn't "work" with the rest of it. And the top and the shoes are both floral-ish(Sure, that's a word, right? right?) prints, and I like the color pairing, so I thought they might be fun, but now I'm not sure. But this is a style blog, mistakes and all, so I finally decided it was good enough to ask everyone else what they think. So, what do you think? :) I mean, personally, I think the sky is blue (Actually, looking out the window right now, its gray... so I'm wrong again... oh well). Okay, bad joke, I know. (I like bad jokes!)

So more than one style blogger has mentioned Halloween, so like fall, I figure that means I can officially be excited about it on my blog. And why am I excited? Because when I go to parties, I am not the only guy in a dress! Okay, I may still be the only guy in a dress, but it does lead to some funny conversations like "What are you going to do with those shoes the rest of the year?" (Wear them, duh!) or "Did you lose a bet?" (That would make this easier to explain wouldn't it?) or "I think your costume cost more than the prize?" (But its such a fabulous costume, who cares?) Most of the people who I expect to end up at the same parties are actually in the know, so it might be a bit more boring this year. But whatever the case, I will totally post my costume on here.

Okay, so Sunday ended up being a crazy day, and yesterday I went on a road trip with a friend to a book signing, and now I'm playing catch up today (including comments on other blogs!). Unfortunately, now I'm a little wiped out, and so it would just be for the best if everyone pretends this entry was far more clever and entertaining than it is. Although I have to add, and I know this might be getting old, I'm amazed at how awesome and friendly style bloggers are. There's a lot of personal reasons I decided to do this blog, but it has ended up being about the people. Which surprised me. But it shouldn't, because one of the few things I know is that the best things in life are ALWAYS about the people: making connections, making new friends, finding out how truly special and creative other people are. So having said all that, I still really love questions in the comments, it makes these entries a lot easier for me to write!

The incredibly sweet Jasmine of Tragic Fairy Tales recently gave me The Sunshine Award. I really appreciate this, thank you Jasmine! But now I'm supposed to pass it on to 12 other bloggers. There are so many other great bloggers and other bloggers who already have it, that I would hate to pick favorites or leave someone out, and so I think I will have to pass on that part of the award. I don't always follow trends, but I do get inspired by them because cute trendy stuff shows up in stores. Well, okay, style blogging is changing that for me a little bit, but that's not my point. Some trends, like rain boots, end up making me want them all the more because I can't find something that works for me (well, in this case, by "work", I mean "fit"). So finally, I found this pair in my size, and *cough* 4 *cough* pairs of shoes later, my rain boots were safely in the mail. And the next day, I see this post by Kendi, and well, I thought "That's a pretty cute outfit and my boots will be here soon, I should try something like that!", but ultimately, the real credit for this outfit is a friend of mine who posted a complaint on Facebook a few days later. She was musing about the trend of all the people wearing rain boots with shorts and skirts, and pointing out that the water will just trickle down your legs into your boots. And I thought, "Hey, I was just thinking about wearing a something like that myself!" So for my friend, who I know is reading this post, I just want you to know, it was raining pretty hard, and I didn't get a single drop of water in my boots!

And yes, I'm outside!!! I do go out sometimes, this is actually my second trip outside since I started this blog (other trip is here even though I ended up not getting pictures outside). This is from yesterday: my wife had a surprise day off work, so we decided to do some shopping and meet up with some friends. I noted, to my surprising and unusual delight, that the weather report called for rain, so I was all about doing a quick change to get these pictures. And if nothing else, I promise I'll try to go outside again on Groundhog day to see if I see my shadow.

Okay, so yesterday Meli22 who is super cool and runs the totally rocking blog The Daily Insanity of a Fashion Addict asked some questions. And I have answers!

Is that your real hair, a wig, etc? How do you wear your hair when dressed this way vs. how do you wear your hair daily? Yes, this is my real hair you're seeing. I grew it out several years ago for many reasons, and one of them did include my interest in fashion. I didn't really accept this part of myself at the time, but hey, I was making progress. I almost always wear my hair up in a ponytail when I'm not dressed like this (also, I usually go without the ribbon too). In fact, this is one of the few times I've had my hair up for an outfit like this. A few months ago, in the search for a new hairdresser, I finally worked up the courage to ask for a slightly more interesting hair cut and got some layering put in, but alas, our most excellent hairdresser has found another job and left no forwarding address, so now I have to be courageous again. For special occasions, my wife helps me style my hair with a curling iron and other magical hair products (I'm still learning when it comes to hair and makeup!)

Okay, I'm starting to understand why other bloggers use dates for their titles. This dress is one of my rare finds from Target that I think actually works for me and fits right. It came with a narrow fabric belt in the same jewel tone that just didn't work for me, so I went with my standby wide belt. More belts are on the shopping list... so much for the less shopping! At least my shopping is more strategic these days. And I'm really having a lot of fun trying to share my wardrobe and making connections with everyone. The heels are also a dark purple, but I'm not sure shows through in the pictures. I'll be away from the computer off and on today, so I might be slow on comments, but I hope everyone has a great day! So, in spite of better judgement, I got some new shoes yesterday. Plural. I have actually been wanting a cute pair of rain boots for a while, and have had trouble finding them in my size, until Payless pulled through for me and a pair showed up on their website recently. And since they were doing buy one get one half off, obviously I had to buy some other pairs too. And since its not raining today, you get this outfit with one of the other pairs I ordered, but I just want everyone to know I'm prepared for the next rainy day. :) This skirt is actually one of my favorite skirts (I've had it about 3 years now), and when I saw this pair of sandals, I thought they would be perfect for this skirt (and a ton of other things too!). Yesterday, Lisa from Respect the Shoes (who has a seriously awesome blog, but I'm pretty sure everyone already knows that) asked some questions, and today, I have answers!

Who are you style icons? I actually don't really think I have any, and my knowledge of the larger world and industry of fashion is more limited than I would like, so about the only name that comes to mind is Tim Gunn. Now, I happen to think he seriously rocks, but he's not really an influence on my style (men's or women's clothing), at least in any way I'm aware of. A couple of my more stylish real life friends over the years have definitely left an impact though. I get a lot of ideas and influence from just seeing other people (including and especially style bloggers!) wearing things in creative ways, or I see something that just strikes me as something I like, and then I try it out myself. I'm definitely an advocate for being adventurous with fashion and just trying things to see if you like it. I've realized no one should ever be afraid of clothes.

How did you get into fashion? This is kinda hard for me to answer, and I'm still trying to fully understand it myself. I actually used to hate myself for my interest in fashion. I didn't even begin to understand my interest until the past 3 or 4 years. I guess one answer would be when I fell in love with a pair of my mom's pumps when I was about 5 or 6. I would have to say I was always a bit of an "artistic" child too, and I have always tried to find creative outlets in everything, but I was afraid of clothes and hyper aware of "girlie" things. I spent the next 20 or so years thinking I was seriously broken for liking women's clothes. As an adult I had a breakthrough when I realized that I should just wear what I like and that it meant nothing more or less other than I had an interest in women's fashions. Since then I have spent a lot of time learning what I like and don't like and how to talk about it. At first, I was very much like a lot of guys, and only knew that I liked something or didn't and didn't understand why, but I've learned a lot (and still have a lot to learn).

What are your fave shops? Well, since today's outfit is almost 100% Maurices, I have to say, its clearly a winner. I also enjoy Torrid, Payless, and Nine West a lot. I typically wear plus size clothing, and have a less common, larger shoe size. I know sizing can be a sensitive issue, and so I'm saying this because I hope it helps answer the question. Unfortunately, what this means is that there are some places that have clothes I find absolutely adorable but I just can't shop there due to sizing.

What's your fave kind of clothing (i.e., dresses, pants, skirts, etc.)? I have a serious addiction to shoes, especially colorful high heels, and tall boots. A lot of classic/retro dresses that my wife tells me are 50's and 60's inspired (I'm still sorting out eras in fashion). But I am a child of the 80's and I can definitely see that the occasional milder reinterpretation of the 80's catches my interest too. I am also a sucker for subtle feminine details. I'm not entirely sure I answered the right question here.

This outfit was another attempt at a more professional look. I think I succeeded. I also think this definitely looks better with the cardigan, but I really liked the sleeves on this top (its one piece with the vest part of it too) so I wanted to show what they looked like too. When I bought this top, I discovered how much I love interesting bow ties like this. I have no idea what the proper name for those are (the collar of the top has long strips of fabric on each side), but I enjoy them and need more. Okay, I don't need more clothes, but hypothetically speaking, if a half dozen more tops in this vein in interesting styles and colors showed up, I would find a place in my closet for them. I would also remind my wife that she doubted me when I bought this top, and how cute it actually turned out. I might get in trouble for posting that.

Anyway, back to the (not) shopping. One of my goals I've figured out for this blog is to try and go through everything in my closet and either try and wear it for an outfit post or decide it doesn't fit or doesn't look that great and put it in a thrift pile, and at least shop less. I won't promise no repeats, or remixes (In fact, I hope to do some), but I will try to go through everything I have. And actually doing this blog has helped me want to shop less (We will not discuss the new shoes I'm expecting in the mail today, or why I needed new shoes, at least until I get to post an outfit with them). I don't exactly wear my clothes outside that much, and this has given me an opportunity to talk about fashion with people who love it as much or more than I do. Oh yeah, I'm also open to attempting to answer questions on the blog, if anyone wants to ask them, I know I've answered some in comments, but I'll be more organized about it and have longer posts, also, I guess I'm getting more comfortable talking writing here. :) I realize this post is a little more talkative than usual, I hope that's okay. This is a simple and comfy outfit I've been thinking about that I wanted to try. The colors remind me of fall, and its finally starting to be cooler in the mornings here. And I need a simple and comfy outfit, today is another no fun day for me. But that's why I have this blog, its a happy creative place, so enough of that! I can't believe all the amazing wonderful people who have come by here and left a comment, but I definitely get a bit tongue tied when trying to figure out what to say. Ashley at Ashley Getting Dressed takes questions in her comments and answers them in the next post, so I think I may give that a try, if anyone wants to ask me something that is! Recently I've seen two bloggers make super cute and creative usage of socks. Collette of Statements in Fashion wore an awesome lacey pair of knee highs with peep toes and Amber's Notebook payed homage to Clarissa Explains it All. (And yes, I remember watching that show when I was in middle school...) And then during our Labor Day weekend shopping, I decided to check out socks at Target and found this pair. I also got this dress at Maurices on clearance for around $23. I've been thinking about it every time I've seen it in the store, the lowered price finally convinced me to buy it. I had a lot of fun putting this look together, but I have no idea how anyone is going to respond to this one. :) Honestly though, I'm amazed at how great the style bloggers are, I really didn't expect to get any readers when I started this. Actually, I had no idea what to expect, but everyone has been so amazingly wonderful. Oh yeah, in case its not clear from the picture, these peep toes have little cutouts with blue stitching highlighting everything. Today is shaping up to be a crazy one, so forgive me if I'm not fast on the comments! I also hope everyone has a great weekend! I'll be posting again on Monday. It was a rainy day here, so I protested with color. I realize that I have two different bags in this collection of pictures, but I wasn't sure how I felt about the color of the orange'ish one, and then I ended up liking the pose, so I kept it. The rain also cooled things down enough that I broke out the skinny jeans. Unfortunately today is a bit of a hectic busy day, but this outfit is super comfy. The top and the cardigan are really soft and warm and bright, so take that rain.
