The Full Windsor.

  • Top: Old Navy (previously worn here)
  • Scarf: Maurices
  • Capri Pants: Maurices
  • Heels: Torrid

I had fun with this look I wore yesterday. Maybe this sounds a little crazy, but I actually like menswear inspired pieces or at least playing with "masculine/feminine" contrast. Okay, that probably just sounds pretentious. Its really just an excuse to explain why I tied a scarf in a full windsor. And even the idea of using a scarf as a tie I borrowed from another blogger (I Get Dressed). So while it was still too warm to wear a fall look, I thought it would be fun to add this scarf as a "please cool down so I can wear fall stuff" look. I had to loop the scarf a few extra times to get the length right, but I think it works. Sorta. The scarf kept doing funny things, and we had to take a lot of pictures just to get these 3. I think I would highly recommend this. Actually, I highly recommend tying something in a full windsor. Its a fun knot to tie. Much more fun than its lazy cousin the half windsor.

Yesterday, Lori, who has the totally awesome blog LORISPEAK, asked this question: Out of curiosity, do you change into your lovely outfits when you come home from work? It's just funny cuz a lot of people dress up for work and then put on their sweats when they get home, but you get so cute and dolled up! I wish I could say these are my clothes everyday, after work or not. I rarely go out dressed, but I do try to sneak out every so often, even if its just for a fabulously dressed fast food drive thru trip. Unfortunately, since I usually leave the house at least once a day, I rarely get to dress up for the whole day, and its usually too hard to dress up for even half the day, so I have to take what opportunities I can to dress up the few days a week it is a possibility. Some weeks I don't even get to dress up at all actually. Although since starting the blog, I am getting to dress up more often, but its still not every day. While I am new to style blogging, I know most style bloggers go for either an "outfit they wore that day" format while others go for a more "artistic" blog with less frequent but more whimsical photos and outfits. Since I don't quite fit in either of those categories I get a little vague about the pictures and when they were taken because I like the idea of the "outfit of the day" format, but I can't really dress up every day. So I guess the pictures here really are an "outfit of the day", just not "the outfit I wore for a day". When it comes to actually taking pictures, we've sorta fallen in to the routine of pulling together several outfits one or two days a week and taking pictures so I have some options to pick for each day. I work from home, but I do have to go out for meetings, errands, and that sort of thing, so I don't usually dress like this everyday. Some afternoons everything cooperates and I will get to dress how I want for most of the evening, and we'll take pictures when my wife gets in from her job. I hope everyone understands about the pictures. I really enjoy the conversations and interactions I've had with other bloggers, but I'm just trying to honestly deal with the constraints in my own life. I hope I didn't disappoint anyone.

Thanks for reading along, and as always, I love answering questions, so ask away in the comments! I hope everyone has a great weekend and I'll be back next week. And of course, as usual, my amazing wife took the pictures.

  1. Haha...my first thought when I saw this outfit was "what masculine pieces!" Haha, the irony of you wearing them is too good for me. I usually tie sashes from skirts and dresses in full windsor knots - I like the bit of class they add instead of a normal bow!

  2. Thanks!!! Just wait until I try a "boyfriend" look by raiding my own (other) closet! Strangely enough, no one seems to notice when my wife raids my closet (its usually for a purse or an accessory...). ;)

  3. ; ) I think this look is cute- so many of us are excited about dressing up for fall!! Love the pop of color in the pumps!

I've been meaning to ask- are you as sharp looking when dressed to 'fit in' as a guy? Or is this the only time where you focus your creative energy on style? It would be cool to see a 'man' style file once in a while, if you expressed yourself in the fun way like you do when you dress feminine! :)

  4. Thank you!!! Fall fashions are usually the ones I enjoy the most, and it took a while for me to branch in to other areas. And its easy to get swept away all the other bloggers looking forward as well. Also, a long crazy hot summer did not help.

And thanks for the question about men's fashion and me. If its okay, I will answer that in a post next week!! :)

  5. Love this look. I have no idea how to tie a full windsor, so I think maybe I need to look it up, because it's a really pretty knot. My husband only wears ties once or twice a year, so I haven't gotten much practice, if any. I like Meli22's question! Can't wait to read the post answering it next week.

Um. No one has mentioned your killer shoes, yet. So I will. OH.MY.GOSH.

  6. Thank you!!! A full windsor is not hard to tie at all. I looked some the directions on web to link to for this post for those interest, but I couldn't find a good one, they all felt like they would only be useful if you already know how to tie one and just needed something to jog your memory. (And seriously, what is it with guys and not knowing how to tie a tie!) :)

  7. I was describing how cool your look is today to my husband - a man cross dressing as a woman dressed like a man. So META. My mind is blown with the awesomeness! :) Very creative!

And thank you for answering my question, and of course you didn't disappoint anyone! This is your blog and you can do as you please (so you needn't worry about pleasing everyone :) ). I really appreciate that you share your fashion creativity with us!

  8. Thanks!!! Meta is a fun word. ;) And don't worry, I knew I couldn't please everyone the moment it occurred to me to start crossdressing on a style blog. So the fact that people read it at all and respond with all these wonderful comments is truly surprising and awesome every day. :)

  9. Okay I totally love the whole menswear inspired women's attire on you. Love it.

And um...I kind of don't know how to tie a tie. At all. Lessons, please? And keep in mind I'm kind of dumb so it might take me several hundred times to get it. I'm having the hardest time figuring out how to tie/drape/wrap/wear scarves!

To echo Sadie's Momma - KILLER shoes! And I really love the color combo between the lime and turquoise. Gorgeous!

  10. Thank you so much!!! I'll see what I can do, although there are lots of great, er okay, they're not actually great, tutorials on the internet on tying a tie. Excellent request, I will put something together for a future post! :) Oh yeah, I retied this scarf about 20 times for this outfit. (And no is ever allowed to say they are dumb or even kind of dumb on my blog!!) It really is a matter of practice though, I still get the lengths wrong, and I've been tying my own ties for over a decade. Its also probably easier to start with an actual tie, since less structured materials just make it harder to master the actual knot.

  11. Love it! Those capris are really flattering and I absolutely love the pop of green in your shoes! I think one of my favorite things is a classic light blue button down. I really like reading your questions and answers too! Keep 'em coming :)

  12. Thank you so much!!! I agree, a light blue button down is definitely a wardrobe staple! I'm also glad you enjoy reading the questions and answers! I hope you're having a great day! :)

  13. Oh my goodness, I absolutely ADORE this outfit! You look awesome! Especially love the shoes...the pop of green really makes the outfit and ties it together with the scarf. You need to give me lessons on accessorizing...I'm horrible at it!

  14. Thank you!!! I'm not so sure I have that much to teach. Besides, you already have such a great sense of style, I'm sure you're great at it anyway!! :)

  15. What a great change of pace. I love the beautiful turqouise color. I "borrowed" one of my dad's ties years ago (it was in the donations pile), and I've since been wearing it as a belt, though tying it like a tie (this was not easy, considering that a waist is much larger than a neck!). I tend to wear the tie belt with dresses, which makes some people look twice : )

  16. Great crop pants. I love menswear looks. I love that you went for the bright green shoe. You're awesomely fearless and come up with some great pairings.

Not even "daily" bloggers end up blogging everyday. Post when you can, and people will respect it. Besides, your blog is already unique; you don't need to make it conform to any 'type' of posting. Rock on!

  17. Jamie - Thank you!!! I think a tie as a dress belt sounds awesome! :)

Megan Mae - Thank you so much!!! :)

  19. The first time I raided my "other" closet for menswear (white dress shirt, tied with a black belt), I felt the same irony you mention. But when we're creating female-outfits, clothing are just pieces to be used in solving a puzzle.

Borrowing masculine touches actually emphasizes one's femininity, as your scarf does here. Nice job.

  20. Oh, and I'm eager to see your post on men's fashion. The only time I addressed that subject was on neckties.

  22. I'm more intrigued by the shoes--HELLO. The green is wonderful, and I'm a sucker for a (slightly) pointy toe.

Quite interesting using a scarf to look similar to a tie. I like it here. I'm thinking I might have to try it out for myself.

  23. Thank you!!! I like a slightly pointy toe shoe as well, but I agree, I don't like them to be "too" pointy when I wear them. I'm glad you think the scarf idea is interesting, and I hope you'll share if you try it!! :)
